Other than for posterity, why should the Cardinals want to close the regular season with the National League’s best overall record? In principle, it’s because they would have a seeding advantage against the theoretically inferior wild-card play-in winner. But given the possible options of the Pirates/Reds or the Dodgers, which team should they prefer to face?
