After being resistant to the idea when the injury first occurred, Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal has decided to have ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow, a procedure that could keep him off the field for the 2013 season.

The Cardinals announced today that shortstop Rafael Furcal will undergo right elbow surgery next week. Dr. James Anderews is scheduled to perform the ligament replacement procedure, known as “Tommy John” surgery. Andrews examined the three-time All-Star yesterday.
