The story goes that about 10 years during a pre-draft workout for the St. Louis Cardinals at old Busch Stadium, a college kid took the field as a shortstop and impressed with his athleticism, his plus arm strength and his overall performance. He wasn't going to stick at shortstop - this much the scouts knew - but he did enough that day to convince the Cardinals to take him in the fifth round of the 2001 draft, 164th overall.
