A man given to proper perspective in difficult times is of no small value.

A baseball manager's equanimity in a crisis, in fact, might be as useful as his tactical acumen on the bench. That's why the presence of Tony La Russa in the dugout is perhaps the best reason not to dismiss the St. Louis Cardinals so quickly in the wake of their loss of star starting pitcher Adam Wainwright to a season-ending elbow injury.
