Tony LaRussa's Clout Grows With Cardinals
There was a late-afternoon news conference at Busch Stadium on Oct. 3, 2007. Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. had fired general manager Walt Jocketty earlier in the day, sending shock waves through Cardinal Nation and the baseball industry. This seismic event was supposed to mark the advent of the "Moneyball" movement in St. Louis.
