Former St. Louis Cardinal shortstop/second baseman Dal Maxvill joins the Fast Lane. Didn't really think the Cardinals had a shot at making the playoffs until the last 4 or 5 games of the season. It was a great mix of youth and veterans for that 1964 St. Louis Cardinal team. Being amongst that group on an everyday basis was a huge thrill for Dal. Also getting a chance to play at second base was also a huge thrill. None of the issues going on in the 60's such as Vietnam, Civil Rights Movement, JFK assassination, didn't bother the team and they focused on winning. Dal worked ten years in the off-season just to make things meet with four children. A lot of guys had second jobs in the winter back in the day. The average salary for a player in the MLB was $6,000, $500 a month. Of course, it was only 19 cents a gallon for gas. Click below for the rest of the interview.
