Bernie Bytes 7-12-10: Home Run Derby? Yawn

The Home Run Derby? No thank you. I'll take a pass Monday night when this event is blared on ESPN. If you like it, enjoy it. To each his/her own. But to me, the HR Derby has come to represent so many things that are wrong with professional sports: hype, ego, celebration of the individual over team. Drooling media that seriously covers this stuff instead of giving it the cartoon treatment. TV's trend toward mindless excess, and forced, trumped-up "competition." And this silliness also pushes the glorfication of the home run, which I don't like because of the two-part impact it's had on the modern game.
