Duluth announced that right-handed pitcher Drew Benes, a 35th round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals, has left the team to sign with the Cardinals. Benes, the son of former No. 1 overall pick and 1993 MLB All-Star Andy Benes, planned on returning to St. Louis before reporting to his Minor League assignment with the Cardinals.
Benes was 1-2 with a 5.03 ERA in 48 and 1/3 innings while also playing first base for the Huskies last summer. He returned to Arkansas State, where he focused primarily on pitching and his numbers improved this spring, going 2-1 with a 3.04 ERA for the Indians.
