Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Tuesday that he told Jaime Garcia that he will enter the season as the club’s fifth starter and David Freese that he will be the Opening Day starter at third base.

When Spring Training started, the questions for the Cardinals included who would be the fifth starter, how the bench and bullpen would be composed and who would be the starting third baseman. Some of those races lingered well into camp, with the fifth starter only being officially named on Tuesday and the bench still not entirely settled.
