The St. Louis Cardinals new hitting coach Mark McGwire has thought privately for years about how to re-enter baseball as an instructor and how to get back into the game in a position to do what he has come to love — talk hitting. There were obstacles. As discussed this week, he was concerned that the suspicions of his steroids use would impede his ability to coach. He also was wary of parachuting in as a guest instructor, dropping some thoughts and then vanishing back to California to fire off text messages of suggestion from afar.
