St. Louis Cardinals: Albert Pujols says that he wants to play another 15 years with the Cardinals. Offer him a reasonable, guaranteed, fifteen-year contract, one that gives fair consideration to the obvious risk of decline with age in assessing the player’s current value, as well as a salary structure that backloads some of the salary to the last years just in case he’s still around at age 44 and he wants to pursue free agency. As an example, consider a contract paying Pujols his already-guaranteed $16 million in 2010, with a one million dollar raise each year for the next 14 years. That’s a $345 million contract. I’d expect Pujols to take such an offer. Could it possibly make sense for the Cards?
