Games Of The Day 9-6-09

Joel Pineiro and Paul Maholm battle in Pittsburgh as the Pirates try to avoid setting a record for consecutive seasons finishing under .500. Call it the curse of Barry Bonds. The Pirates never really tried to keep the greatest hitter of his generation (yes, this was true before the scandals), and they never recovered from his departure. The closest they came was in 1997 with a 79-83 finish, a .488 winning percentage. They almost repeated that in 1999 with a 78-83 mark.

The Pirates hit Pineiro well this season with 20 hits in 13 innings, good for eight runs. Maholm allowed a 3.29 ERA in two starts against the Cardinals.
