Molina reached with a leadoff single, and La Russa, who had other options available, thumbed Ryan into the game to pinch-run. Ryan took second on a balk. He reached third on a sacrifice bunt. And, even with the Cubs' infield in to cut him off at the plate, Ryan beat the throw from the second baseman. The Cardinals won, 4-3. It was more than a run for Ryan. It was a realization.
