Time to sign
What: Deadline to sign draftees
When: August 17
Monday's midnight deadline to sign players selected in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft is looming. At least one highly touted draftee -- let's call him SS -- with an agent whose name starts with "B" and ends with "oras" is more than likely to keep a certain patriotically named organization up late. Watch those checkbooks.
Stargazing in State College
What: New York-Penn League All-Star Game
When: August 18
Not every 2009 Draft pick waited until the last minute to sign. In fact, several have already been tabbed to play in their first professional All-Star Game. The Pirates' Brock Holt, the Yankees' Neil Medchill, the Indians' Jordan Henry, the Mets' Sam Honeck and the Marlins' Jordan Henry will partake in the festivities in State College, Penn.
Pena starts all over again
What: Burlington @ Quad Cities
When: August 20
Tony Pena -- yes, the Tony Pena who's been the everyday shortstop for the Royals in the Majors for a season and a half -- is playing with the Class A Burlington Bees in the Midwest League. It's not what you think, though; Pena, who hit .098 with two RBIs and three runs scored in 40 games for Kansas City this year, is working on his conversion to starting pitcher. He's likely to make his second Class A start on Thursday.
