Week Ahead: Key Stretch For Contenders & One Basement-Dweller

Look no further than Monday's starting pitchers to see how these first-place clubs are faring. The Cardinals will start Chris Carpenter, 7-0 with a 2.10 ERA in his past eight starts. The Dodgers plan to counter with Charlie Haeger, a knuckleballer making his first appearance in 2009.

L.A.'s struggles began when they lost three of four in St. Louis last month. Beginning with that series, the Dodgers have won only eight of 20 and seen their division lead drop to five games. The Cardinals are 14-4 in that time and lead the NL Central by five while riding Matt Holliday's hot bat. He leads the majors in average, OBP and slugging since being traded to the Cardinals.
