Wallowing in the luxury of an eight-game lead, the Cardinals today send out John Smoltz for his first start wearing Birds on the Bat. Depending on the day and the interviewee, this could be the first of only two starts or part of an open-ended commitment due to Friday’s groin strain suffered by snake-bitten Kyle Lohse.
