Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-17-09: Brett Tomko Called Up; Esteban Yan Returns To Indy Leagues; Jeff Suppan Another Rehab Start; Brandon Garner Hits D.L.

Brett Tomko (Athletics):
The A's rotation mystery has been solved.

Brett Tomko will be called up from Triple-A Sacramento to start Monday's series opener against the Yankees, manager Bob Geren announced after Oakland's 3-2 win over the White Sox on Sunday. Vin Mazzaro will be pushed back to Tuesday for an extra day's rest.

Jeff Suppan (Brewers):
After Suppan surrendered four runs in 3 1/3 innings at Class A Wisconsin on Saturday night, club officials decided he needed another outing. Suppan will start Thursday for Triple-A Nashville, leaving him lined up to return to the Brewers' starting rotation on Aug. 25 against the Reds at Miller Park.

Ron Villone (Nationals):
Interim manager Jim Riggleman loves to talk about Ron Villone. The skipper called his reliever a leader by example, because he wants to pitch on a regular basis and watches the game from the dugout after completing his work on the mound.

Esteban Yan (Bridgeport):
Remember when Esteban Yan inked with the Florida Marlins last week. Well, not so fast…

Brandon Garner (Windy City):
The Windy City Thunderbolts placed him on the 14-day disabled list.

Jason Marquis (Rockies):
It is not shaping up to be a banner market for starters. Los Angeles Angels right-hander John Lackey probably will draw the biggest free-agent bids. Colorado's Jason Marquis and Detroit's Jarrod Washburn are having breakthrough seasons at the right time and likely will be overpaid.

Jack Wilson (Mariners):
Shortstop Jack Wilson, who missed the past 41/2 games because of a strained hamstring, ran before Sunday’s game and may be able to play Tuesday, although Wakamatsu said it would be more likely Wednesday.
