Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-10-09: Clayton Mortensen Optioned; Russell Branyan Grand Slam; Scott Rolen Out Longer; Troy Percival Leaning Toward Retirement

Clayton Mortensen (Athletics):
Having no need for a fifth starter for at least the next week, the A's on Sunday optioned starting pitcher Clayton Mortensen to Triple-A Sacramento, replacing him with left-handed reliever Jay Marshall.

Jeff Suppan (Brewers):
Starters Dave Bush (triceps) and Jeff Suppan (rib cage) still aren't ready to rejoin the rotation, and Bush had a setback on Saturday when he reported tightness and stiffness in his forearm after throwing a bullpen session on Friday. Both pitchers could possibly go out on rehab starts sometime next week.

Chris Perez (Indians):
Reliever Chris Perez has seen both the good and bad of the Indians' pitching exploits and cited a relatively inexperienced staff for the team's early-season struggles. Only Cliff Lee and Carl Pavano had amassed any sustained success as a starter. Now that both are gone, no starter in the Indians' rotation is older than 26 years old.

Russell Branyan (Mariners):
And with the bases loaded in the sixth, Branyan hit the first pitch he saw from Rays reliever Jeff Bennett into the Tampa Bay bullpen for his 26th homer of the year and fourth career grand slam, removing all doubt as to who was going to take the rubber match of the three-game series.

Q. What's next for Russell Branyan?

A. To finish the next two months. Russell - we hope he realizes this is a place he oughta stay. As we move forward - I talked to his wife two days ago - and Jill loves it here. I think Russell likes it here. I think the relationship we have is great. I think the relationship he has with the staff is terrific. I think when you're a player, the one thing is, you want to be wanted. You want to be somewhere where you're comfortable, somewhere where you know you're an integral part of it. And he is all of those things here.

David Eckstein (Padres):
It was on or about the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline when San Diego general manager Kevin Towers was queried by the Minnesota Twins if veteran infielder David Eckstein was available.

Jim Leyland (Tigers):
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Sunday he's "sick and tired" of the ongoing stories about names reportedly on the list of players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003, calling it a no-win situation and an unfair one for players.

Troy Percival (Rays):
RHP Troy Percival hasn't announced his retirement, but after corresponding with him last week, manager Joe Maddon is under the impression his career is over.

Mark Grudzielanek (Twins):
Three weeks after signing a minor league deal, second baseman Mark Grudzielanek is at Class AA New Britain, and the Twins' reports haven't been glowing.

Grudzielanek, 39, has batted .267 (8-for-30) in eight games and made two errors in six games at second base.

"He's doing fine," Gardenhire said. "He's not moving well defensively. Swinging the bat OK. Just trying to get himself in playing shape more than anything, I believe.

"He's got a ways to go. They're talking about a month [from the time he signed], so I don't know."
Star Tribune

Russ Springer & Joe Nelson (Rays):
RHP Russ Springer wore No. 36 in Oakland, but he'll let Randy Choate keep it with the Rays since Springer got close. "Usually if I wear something in the 30s, I have a decent year and go to the playoffs, and if I wear something in the 40s, I have arm surgery," Springer said. "So I was glad to walk in and see No. 37."
St. Petersburg Times

So Taguchi (Cubs):
The 51s led, 2-0, going into the bottom of the fifth, when third baseman Kevin Howard threw wildly to first on So Taguchi's grounder, allowing Chris Robinson to score. The Cubs took the lead in the next frame when Micah Hoffpauir, who was sent down to Iowa on Friday, hit a bloop double and came home on Griffin's shot onto Sheffield Avenue.
