Should Albert Pujols Bat Second? A Case Study Of Batting Orders

It has now become an established strategy for the best power hitter on the team, traditionally put in the clean-up spot, to bat third. This even led Tony LaRussa to go one step further and bat the pitcher eighth so that Albert Pujols would bat in a de facto clean-up spot after the first inning. But is it really the best way to construct a line-up? Putting a good hitter higher up in the order gives him more plate appearances, so might it be better to have your best hitter even higher in the order?
