As a new week begins, and August rapidly approaching, the second-place Cardinals trail the Chicago Cubs by a half-game in the NL Central. Houston is in third, 2 games out. Milwaukee is in fourth, 3 out. And Cincinnati is gasping, suddenly 7.5 games out in the standings. (Last-place Pittsburgh, an afterthought, is 9 out).
