Production measures the two run elements of a player, the ones he scores and the ones he drives in. Like Bill James and Gene Orza, I don’t subtract out the home runs. Players who drive in lots of runs tend to be good power hitters. Players who score lots of runs tend to do a great job of getting on base. Players who both score and drive tend to be complete players, giving others plenty of opportunities for RBI while hitting for power to moves others around the bases.
