Unfortunately, I'd seen this unnerving scene before. Nearly 18 years ago inside a hushed domed football stadium in suburban Detroit, I sat high above the playing field as a giant of a man named Mike Utley, 6 feet 5 and over 300 pounds, lay motionless on his back. He was unable to move. He was unable to feel any sensations in his legs. He was strapped to the back of a flatbed golf cart, his sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae damaged beyond repair.
