Lost in the euphoria of last night’s 4-1 victory and sweep of the Yankees was an injury to right fielder J.D. Drew.
Neither manager Terry Francona nor Drew made much of it afterward, but Drew had to leave in the eighth inning with a tweaked left quad and will probably miss at least tonight’s series opener against the Indians in Cleveland.
Drew was hurt in the sixth inning while chasing down a line drive by Hideki Matsui in right field. He was replaced two innings later by Jonathan Van Every.
“It was just a little cramp in the left quad,” Drew said. “I had to change direction really fast for that ball Matsui hit into the corner. I don’t think it’s anything major.”
Francona said Drew will probably sit tonight, with Jeff Bailey getting the start against left-hander Cliff Lee.
“Rather than lose a guy for a month we probably won’t play him (tonight),” Francona said.
