The eight-year veteran had a glimmer of hope last month. He was granted a private workout with the St. Louis Cardinals at the end of their minor league spring training. Ackerman and former Barnstormers closer Charlie Weatherby flew to Jupiter, Fla. and threw in front of team scouts.
When that didn't result in a contract offer, Ackerman decided to return to his hometown team.
"I don't know how real that opportunity was," Ackerman said. "I know it didn't hurt to go down there, unless I couldn't hit the catcher or something. I figure it was worth it to just throw for those guys."
