Moving On Up 9-5-08

Jason Motte, St. Louis Cardinals

CALLED UP: Recalled from Triple-A Memphis when rosters expanded.

DEBUT: Sept. 3 in a 4-3 loss to Arizona. The fourth of five pitchers, he allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings, striking out two. He inherited two runners and stranded both.

NOTES: The 19th-rounder from 2003 out of Iona College in New York was drafted as a catcher, but after hitting .191 in five years he moved onto the mound and the result is in the numbers. In relief at Memphis this year, he posted a 3.24 ERA in 63 games and struck out 110 batters in 66 2/3 innings while walking 26. He posted a 2.20 ERA at Double-A Springfield last summer, as well, and has emerged as one of the Cards' most promising late-inning relief prospects.
