Stadium Memories

"The House That Ruth Built," as New York Evening Telegram sportswriter Fred Lieb dubbed Yankee Stadium when it opened in 1923, will play host to its last All-Star Game on Tuesday night. It was widely recognized that the drawing power of home run champion Babe Ruth made that new stadium possible, and the Yankees, once ensconced in their new home after being kicked out of the Polo Grounds by the co-tenant New York Giants, went on in 1923 to win the first of their 26 World Series championships.
