Off The Piggyback

Palm Beach has scrapped the piggyback rotation, where a pitcher starts a game throwing no more than five innings, then relieves for four innings in his next scheduled appearance.

The reason? Four members of the Cardinals' eight-man rotation have been promoted to Class AA Springfield.

"From the beginning, we were going to shoot for the first half, see what happened and evaluate it from there," said Palm Beach manager Gaylen Pitts, who called the experiment a success.

Kyle Mura has benefited the most from the switch back to a traditional five-man rotation. The reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week lasted at least 71/3 in two starts last week, winning both games.
