109: Players on the disabled list before their clubs played a game.
The list includes DL perennials such as New York Mets outfielder Moises Alou, on the DL for the sixth time since April 2005. Minnesota was the only major-league club without a player on the DL. St. Louis and Florida led the majors with eight players apiece on the DL.
The Cardinals were paying their injured players a total of $171,917.06 per day. That reflects the importance of those players to the team. Starting pitchers Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder and Joel Pineiro all began the season on the disabled list.
The odds are against all three returning to the Cardinals' rotation and pitching well this season. If St. Louis gets two of the arms back at reasonable efficiency, their chances in the NL Central will improve dramatically.
