Different Atmosphere In Cardinals Camp

Some camps are opening with a different atmosphere than usual, and a good example of that was in Jupiter, Fla. The Cardinals will have three different position players in their starting lineup, and the pitching staff is still a work in progress. Unlike most previous years, the Cardinals will have more of an underdog perception around the Majors.

Manager Tony La Russa said he was pleased with the turnout on the day before workouts started, and expressed enthusiasm for what he believes will be a competitive and entertaining team. He explained, however, that with a somewhat younger group, camp will run a bit differently in 2008.

"With young guys, you add repetitions," La Russa said. "We try every year to start at zero with the instruction, but this is one year where if there are six ways to explain a drill ... you make sure you mention all six things. I think the common sense things are going to be stressed. There isn't going to be anything too magical.

"It's an opportunity for these guys. I know they're excited about it, and I'm excited to watch them."
