Teams With Unfinished Business

The reunion of Scott Rolen and Tony La Russa in spring training could produce more fireworks than the scheduled Roger Clemens-Brian McNamee showdown before Congress. But Rolen, coming off shoulder surgery and earning $33 million over the next three seasons, remains difficult to move.

The Cardinals do not want to lose more offense after trading Jim Edmonds and replacing David Eckstein with Cesar Izturis. Ideally they would like to add a more right-handed hitting outfielder to help reduce the pressure on Edmonds' projected replacement, Colby Rasmus.

Matt Clement, who did not pitch last season while recovering from shoulder surgery, is the only addition to the rotation. The team's goal will be to stay in contention early in the season, then get hot if Mark Mulder returns in May and Chris Carpenter at the All-Star break.
