Houston Chronicle: NL Central Preview

St. Louis Cardinals

Key additions: RHP Matt Clement, 3B Troy Glaus, SS Cesar Izturis

Key losses: 3B Scott Rolen, SS David Eckstein, CF Jim Edmonds

Three main questions of the spring: 1. How soon will LHP Mark Mulder be ready after late-season shoulder surgery? 2. Is Colby Ramus, 21, able to jump from Class AA to the majors as the club's center fielder? 3. Is Clement, who hasn't pitched since 2006. healthy enough to start the season?

Team strength: 1B Albert Pujols still is the best hitter in the league. C Yadier Molina throws out everybody who tries to steal. A deep bullpen headed by RHP Jason Isringhausen. Why the team can or can't win: Probably won't: Not enough starting pitching (Chris Carpenter won't be back until All-Star break after Tommy John surgery).

Projected payroll: $105 million
