As if to add immolation to insult, the shaky-kneed National League scheduled the Cleveland Spiders’ 1899 opener at St. Louis against the newly christened, smartly garbed, but strangely familiar St. Louis Perfectos.

Did Cy Young Throw The First Pitch In Cardinals History?
The last time the Cardinals started a season with a record this good (19-6), they weren’t called the Cardinals but they sure did look familiar.

The Greatest Cardinals Of Each Time: Perfectos & Pre-Branch Rickey, 1899-1919
By 1898 the Browns, kings of the American Association, were NL bottom-feeders, and when a bereft Von der Ahe sold out to Frank and Stanley Robison there wasn't enough capital left in the name to avoid a change to the delightfully named fifth-place St. Louis Perfectos, the Frankenstein-ish result of an offseason heart transplant.

Cardinal Leaders In The Decade Of 1900's
Putting ourselves in the first decade on the 20th century we would've had a hard time for this was, believe it or not, the worst decade in the history of the Redbirds. Its hard to believe after some of the horrible seasons in the 1890's. Traditional Triple Crown Vs. Sabermetric Triple Crown: A History
Loyal friend and reader DaveBug recently asked via Twitter, "Using your Triple Crown def (RC/TB/OBP) who won it that didn’t win the old trio, and who won that that didn’t win the SABR version?" Ask and ye shall receive, DaveBug. We suppose being part of a limited readership has its benefits! We’ve actually been meaning to do a comprehensive post like this for some time now. After all, we first wrote about our so-called Sabermetric Triple Crown back in 2005 and revised it later that year, so it’s about time.
