Daniel Ponce de Leon, angling for a spot in the Cardinals’ rotation or the bullpen and not thirsting for frequent driving miles between Memphis and St. Louis, had blown through the competition in his first two outings of the spring. Over five innings, he had struck out seven and walked only one while allowing no runs.
