During the frenzy of the Cardinals’ first champagne celebration this fall, pitching coach Mike Maddux stood near a tub of ice and beer in the far corner of the home clubhouse. He had a bottle of beer in his hand — presumably to share by splashing at another coach or a player — and another at his feet, stashed under the tub and behind his right leg, presumably for later.
