The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have signed six-time National League All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to a five-year (2020-24) contract extension. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Goldschmidt was acquired by the Cardinals on December 5, 2018 in a four-player trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Paul Goldschmidt wanted to stay in St. Louis, just like Mark McGwire, Jim Edmonds and Matt Holliday. Acquired in December from Arizona, the six-time All-Star first baseman gave up a chance to become a free agent after this season when he finalized a new contract with the Cardinals that guarantees an additional $130 million from 2020-24.
