Before Sunday’s exhibition game here against the New York Mets, Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said he saw lefthander Austin Gomber, his starter for the game, as one able to either start or relieve, just as he did last year. Then, Gomber allowed two home runs in 2 1/3 innings as he gave up six runs in a 9-1 loss, meaning he has given up five home runs in his last five innings this spring.
