As he sat at his locker about four weeks ago, back with the big league club and counting the days until he returned to the rotation as a September reinforcement, Adam Wainwright outlined exactly what he hoped would happen in the coming weeks. He wanted to find some way, any way to “help this team win games,” to prove his health with every throw, and to provide “a bunch of quality innings.” He agreed that he was pitching that month to convince the Cardinals he could play for them next year.
