When Mike Shildt was named the Cardinals’ interim manager on the evening of Saturday, July 14, he took over a team that was demoralized, dysfunctional and a mess on the field. The effort was unacceptable. The product was boring. Fans were embarrassed by the team, and the no-show count was increasing. Apathy was overtaking anger, and that’s never healthy for a franchise.
