Intrigued by Tyson Ross’ four-seam fastball spin rate, the St. Louis Cardinals took a flyer on the 31-year-old right-hander, who had been designated for assignment by the last-place San Diego Padres. A convenient clause in Ross’ contract — detailed in this piece by Mark Saxon — and the Cards’ plethora of starting options relegates Ross, at least initially, to a bullpen role. But the addition of Ross is the just the type of incremental upgrade that could prove instrumental in the Cardinals’ pursuit of postseason play.
