He later rode “prop planes” and “dive-bombed” into obscure hubs as a roving instructor for the Padres in the mid-1990s. His years as a minor league manager took him to Cedar Rapids, Edmonton, Salt Lake City, Fullerton, Maui and plenty of stops in between.
