This will be a transition year for the Cardinals at this position. Jhonny Peralta, on the tail end of a four-year contract, will be the regular at the start of the season but perhaps not at the end and almost certainly not next season. Peralta, adequate or even better at shortstop in his first two seasons with the Cardinals, sustained a torn ligament in his left thumb last spring training.
