First baseman Matt Carpenter again is out of the Cardinals’ lineup Saturday, marking the third day in a row he has missed with lower back tightness. And, with no substantive improvement being shown, Carpenter has called the players’ association and asked that his name be removed from the United States roster for the World Baseball Classic that starts next week.

Matt Carpenter will not be participating in the World Baseball Classic, as his lower back tightness has not fully resolved itself. The All-Star was planning to join team USA on after the Cardinals' game in Fort Myers Monday, but will instead remain behind with St. Louis.

Concern that tightness in his back could lead to a more serious injury and jeopardize his availability for the start of the regular season will keep Matt Carpenter from going to the World Baseball Classic.
