A pitching pairing worthy of Opening Day was going to be the feature of Wednesday’s Cardinals exhibition with the Washington Nationals. But, a couple of hours before game time, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was more specific about Carlos Martinez, who will oppose Max Scherzer Wednesday.

When the St. Louis Cardinals play host to the Chicago Cubs on Opening Night, Carlos Martinez will be standing on the mound to start the game.

It will be the first such assignment of Martinez's career, and, at age 25, he'll be the youngest pitcher to draw an Opening Day start for the Cardinals since Joe Magrane in 1989. Martinez will be opposed by Jon Lester in the nationally-televised game against the Cubs at Busch Stadium.
