Junior Fernandez was only 12 when he emigrated with his parents from the Dominican Republic to Miami in 2009, beginning what would prove to be a rare route back home in his quest to reach St. Louis. His parents hoped the move would provide greater opportunities for the family. At that point, baseball didn’t rank among their top draws to the United States.
