Veteran Carlos Beltran comes with switch-hitting power and a prominent playoff resume, and will play next season at 40 years old — likely past his time as an everyday outfielder. Still, he can likely find work as a full-time designated hitter, which might be a more appealing job than the one the Nationals could offer him. The same is true for former Cardinals stalwart Matt Holliday, who would provide power, experience and a positive clubhouse influence — but can likely do all that everyday for an American League team.
