On July 7, when the Cardinals had played their 85th game, just past the halfway point of the season, Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was hitting .256 with 15 doubles, two homers and 28 runs batted in. Given his defensive prowess, his relative lack of offense wasn’t a detriment to the club, but it reinforced the naysayer notion that he had lost too much weight the year before and had gained too much age along the way to be a production-type player any more.
