Holy Matt Holliday! Slugger Hits Storybook Homer

Having informed Matt Holliday earlier this week that the organization is unlikely to exercise his $17 million option for 2017, general manager John Mozeliak announced that the Cardinals would activate Holliday from the disabled list on Friday in order to give the veteran outfielder an opportunity to salute the fans with one final appearance.

After weeks of trying and trying and trying to get his fractured thumb healthy enough to be in the lineup, Matt Holliday rejoined the active roster Friday so the Cardinals could do something bigger than using him in a key at-bat or sending him out for a start.

Matt Holliday was too emotional to speak with the media Friday before the game, following the public declaration by the Cardinals they did not intend to pick up his 2017 option. The emotion came from his activation from the disabled list, as it was intended to give him a chance to say goodbye; to get the send-off his seven and a half years in St. Louis warranted from the fans.

Another night, another epic home run that will be forever etched in the mind of St. Louis Cardinals fans. This time, it was Matt Holliday–activated before the game from the disabled list with the team announcing it is unlikely the option will be picked up on his contract for next year.
