During the spring of 2005, the Cardinals dispatched a handful of scouts to see a former prep pitcher with a sore elbow who had suddenly, remarkably taken aim at Bo Jackson’s Alabama high school record for home runs. The young slugger had 42 homers in his final two seasons in high school, and a record 24 as a senior.
