Coach Jose Oquendo has been a big part of the Cardinals’ collective working brain since 1999, and he’s made a difference under two managers, Tony La Russa and Mike Matheny. He’s also been a coach under two general managers, Walt Jocketty and John Mozeliak. He’s remained a fixture through regime changes, manager changes, coaching-staff changes and a multitude of roster makeovers. With so many people coming and going, having Oquendo on the scene was always reassuring. Until Oquendo’s right knee knocked him down — there have been two surgeries and lots of pain — he’d been as permanent as the Stan Musial statue at Busch Stadium.
