There have been very few, if any occasions, in Mike Matheny’s first four seasons as Cardinals manager when he has had only 11 pitchers on his club rather than at least 12 for a particular game. This especially was true in the previous three seasons when lefthanded specialist Randy Choate was employed, often necessitating two, or even three, pitchers working in the same inning because Choate often faced just one hitter after entering.
